Key to Victory in 2010?
Define Ourselves, Unmask Democrats

By Representative Dave Robertson

May 30, 2009

As a veteran of many campaigns and elections, I am often approached by newcomers to party activism who are eager to know the key to victory on election day and how they can make a difference.

More than at any time in recent years, I believe victory can be summed up in a single word: Definition!

I began my experience with politics in a local election in 1982 and have been either a campaign manager or a candidate for office in nearly every election since. This experience has shown me that clarity of definition always works in favor of the conservative GOP candidate. The reason is clear when you observe democrats as they present their ideas to a variety of audiences. In strongly Democratic districts, liberals are free to be their very liberal selves. In competitive districts at election time, however, Democrats behave very differently. The majority of American values are still Center/Right. To be successful, Democrats know they must camouflage themselves. In 2002, I defeated an incumbent Democrat who touted her local Chamber of Commerce background while she voted against job providers on every key vote in Lansing. She also claimed to be pro-life, yet repeatedly cast pro-abortion votes.

As a democrat, President Obama gives lip service to conservative values while he moves aggressively leftward in his decision-making. Gov. Granholm’s claims of moderation are overshadowed by her decisions for the past seven years to increase property, income and business taxes.

To expose liberals, we must do our homework and draw public attention to votes which strip away their veneer of moderation. The Granholm/Cherry Administration must be exposed for what it is: an administration in which the first, last and only solution to every issue is to raise taxes. We must expose Jon Stryker and the millions of dollars he has spent buying influence to advance a radical homosexual rights agenda.

There is one final, crucial, component in the unmasking of liberal Democrats. As Republicans, we must be true to ourselves and our beliefs. When Republicans vote for tax increases or wasteful spending, it plays right in to the Democrat’s camouflage game. To do so is not merely contrary to our core principles; but it can set the cause of conservative government back immeasurably. Holding true to both fiscal and social conservatism is the only way to guarantee the clarity of definition necessary to draw the majority of Michigan voters to our Party and its candidates and guarantee victory on election day!
